Professor Walter Paulus embarked on his journey in neurology in 1979 at the University Hospital for Neurology in Düsseldorf. Throughout his career, he has held prominent positions at renowned institutions such as the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London, the Alfried Krupp Hospital in Essen, and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. Serving as the Professor and Chair of the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology at the University Medical Center Göttingen from 1992 to 2021, he continued his research as a research professor at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich after retirement.

At the forefront of his research, Professor Paulus has focused on the development of innovative stimulation methods for inducing neuroplasticity, including transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), and transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS). His work has significantly advanced the field of non-invasive brain stimulation, paving the way for novel therapeutic approaches. In addition to his contributions to neuroplasticity research, Professor Paulus has also made significant strides in clinical-oriented studies related to epilepsy, restless legs syndrome, Parkinson's disease, and pain.

Professor Paulus's impactful contributions have been widely acknowledged by the scientific community. He has received several accolades, including the Price for the Best Thesis of the University of Düsseldorf in 1979. In 2016, he was honored with the Hans Berger Preis of the German Society for Clinical Neurophysiology (DGKN), and in 2022, he received the Pierre Gloor Award from the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society (ACNS). Furthermore, he served as the Chairman of the European and African Chapter of the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology (IFCN) from 2014 to 2018 and as the President of the IFCN from 2018 to 2022.
